The 8th China 400 Series Stainless Steel Conference was successfully held in Beijing.
On November 25th, the 8th China 400 Series Stainless Steel Conference, themed "Exchange of New International Technologies, Development of New Functions, and Expansion of New Applications," was held in Beijing. This conference focused on the core challenges and breakthrough paths facing 400 series stainless steel under the background of high-quality development, aiming to promote technological innovation and application expansion within the industry.
Xia Nong, Vice President of the China Iron and Steel Association, attended the conference and delivered a speech. He pointed out that stainless steel, as an important component of the steel industry, plays a crucial role in promoting the transformation of the steel industry towards high-end, intelligent, and green development. He particularly emphasized that actively developing low-nickel and low-nickel 400 series ferritic stainless steel is an effective path to achieve sustainable and high-quality development of my country's stainless steel industry. With the continuous advancement of smelting and processing technologies, 400 series stainless steel is expanding from conventional applications to ultra-pure and special functional applications, and its application fields are continuously expanding, making it one of the steel grades with the greatest development potential.

Xia Nong also pointed out that the current proportion of 400-series stainless steel in my country is still less than 20%, which is significantly lower than that in developed regions such as Europe and Japan, indicating a long road ahead for its promotion and application. To this end, he offered four suggestions: first, strengthen guidance for users in material selection, helping them master key usage points; second, improve product quality stability to ensure worry-free use for users; third, continuously optimize costs to provide more cost-effective products; and fourth, innovate marketing models and increase market promotion efforts.
Nan Hai, a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Taiyuan Iron & Steel Group (TISCO), Deputy General Manager of TISCO Stainless Steel, and Director of the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Stainless Steel, stated in his speech that my country's stainless steel industry is undergoing profound changes. 400-series stainless steel, with its advantages of low nickel content and controllable costs, has become the fastest-growing segment, achieving rapid substitution in areas such as building curtain walls, kitchen and bathroom appliances, and highway guardrails. Although 300-series austenitic stainless steel still dominates, 400-series stainless steel, through continuous technological innovation, has shown enormous development potential in high-end application fields.

Nan Hai emphasized that under the "dual-carbon" strategy, stainless steel, as a green and low-carbon material with a complete life cycle, is accelerating its replacement of traditional steel in emerging fields such as new energy and environmental protection equipment. He believes that "the low-carbon properties of 400 series stainless steel will be key to the industry's breakthrough." In the future, the industry should focus on building three major development systems: industry-academia-research-application collaboration, supply chain collaboration, and international collaboration, to jointly promote the 400 series stainless steel industry towards a new stage of high-quality development.
During the conference, a new book launch ceremony was also held for "Modern Niobium-Containing Stainless Steel—How to Improve the Performance of Stainless Steel with Niobium." This conference was jointly hosted by the Stainless Steel Branch of the China Iron and Steel Association, the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Stainless Steel, and the CITIC Microalloying Technology Center, with the support of China Baowu Taiyuan Iron & Steel, Tsingshan Group, and Jiuquan Iron & Steel Stainless Steel. It attracted over 100 representatives from research institutes, universities, industry associations, production enterprises, and design units in the upstream and downstream of the stainless steel industry both domestically and internationally.
