TISCO's high-end stainless steel products have successfully secured the bid for China's first deep underground hydrogen storage research and pilot plant project.
Recently, TISCO and its partners, including WSGRI ENGINEERING & SURVEYING INCORPORATION LIMITED, conducted specialized technical coordination and cost reviews for the special steel grades required for the construction of the Hubei Daye Deep Underground Hydrogen Storage Research and Pilot Base. A supply agreement was ultimately reached. The high-performance stainless steel developed by TISCO will be applied to critical sections of China's first demonstration project for hydrogen storage in rock caverns, providing essential material support for this national-level strategic energy reserve base. This demonstrates TISCO's technological leadership and commitment in the field of specialty steel.
The Hubei Daye Deep Underground Hydrogen Storage Research and Pilot Base is a key energy R&D demonstration project approved by the National Energy Administration. Upon completion, it will become China's first large-scale deep underground hydrogen storage research platform, gradually evolving into a national-level hydrogen energy strategic reserve base and regional hydrogen storage hub. The project imposes extremely stringent requirements on core materials' resistance to high-pressure corrosion, long-term structural stability, and environmental adaptability. Following multiple rounds of material comparisons and comprehensive evaluations, TISCO stainless steel was successfully selected for its outstanding performance.
To fully meet the project's technical requirements, TISCO organized a dedicated technical team to implement precise control throughout the entire process—from material R&D to production delivery. In composition design, strict control over key alloy element content ensures the material possesses outstanding corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. In process treatment, customized heat treatment regimens and surface treatment technologies significantly enhance the material's durability in complex geological environments. In quality control, dimensions and surface quality requirements exceed industry standards, while reinforced transportation protection measures guarantee zero-defect product delivery.
Deep underground hydrogen storage represents a crucial direction for large-scale hydrogen energy storage, holding strategic significance for ensuring energy security and advancing energy structure transformation. The implementation of this project will accumulate critical data and practical experience for standardizing and engineering deep underground hydrogen storage technology in China. The successful deployment of TISCO's special steel grades not only signifies a major breakthrough for domestically produced high-end stainless steel in cutting-edge new energy fields but also provides a robust material foundation for achieving self-reliance and controllability in China's hydrogen energy industry chain and realizing the “dual carbon” goals.
