Handan Steel's high-strength, high-toughness casing steel for shale gas wells fills a domestic market gap

Recently, Handan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of HBIS Group), in collaboration with the HBIS Materials Research Institute, successfully developed and delivered more than 1,000 metric tons of TG125, a 1,000 MPa-grade high-strength, high-toughness steel for SEW (high-frequency welded hot-rolled) casing. Designed specifically for extreme operating conditions such as shale gas wells, this product combines high strength with high toughness, effectively addressing the challenges of high pressure, corrosion, and mechanical loads in deep, ultra-deep, and complex geological environments. Previously, there were no precedents for the production and application of such SEW casing steel in China; this bulk delivery marks the product’s formal certification by customers and a breakthrough in domestic production.

During the R&D process, Handan Iron & Steel and the HBIS Materials Research Institute formed a joint team that conducted in-depth visits to the customer’s tube manufacturing lines. Based on the material requirements for processes such as forming, welding, and heat treatment, they innovatively designed a dedicated process route spanning from steelmaking to heat treatment. Through breakthroughs in key technologies—including low-cost composite composition design, control of banded microstructure, and uniform softening of steel coils—the team successfully resolved multiple technical challenges during product development, ensuring high-quality production. The launch of this product not only fills a domestic market gap but also further enhances the brand influence and market competitiveness of Handan Steel’s high-end hot-rolled products.
